In a Nutshell: I visited North Korea in late 2014 and over 16 days ventured to all corners of this mysterious nation on one of the longest itineraries ever executed for foreigners. Here are 100 photos (part 1) taken during this visit to North Korea.

My Grandmothers family is from North Korea. She fled during the war with her husband but unfortunately none of her family made it with her. I remember as a kid (in the 80’s) my Grandmother crying during the first round of “reunification” that the North allowed. They listed names on TV and if someone from the South saw a family members name they could get in contact with each other. My Grandmother watch for hours but never saw any of her family member names. I’ve never seen such pain and sadness on her face.
I found myself fluctuating between laughing and crying due to the ridiculousness and sadness of the pictures you were able to post. I couldn’t help but wonder while looking through them if a cousin of mine could be in one of those pictures. I’ve wanted to visit North Korea for years now but I don’t think that would be possible for me. Not only am I an American but my husband is in the military. So my only insight to this country of my ancestors is through pictures like yours. Thank you for sharing them!
WOW! Fantastic pictures! I truly enjoyed getting a chance to look into this strange corner of our world. It’s hard to imagine that, here in the 21st century, a country can be so isolated from the rest of the world yet be so interesting and beautiful. Thanks again for taking the time to show us this fascinating place!
Thanks for a great post, very interesting. Really enjoying it. I am currently here in S. Korea and only have seen things only from one side so far.
fantastic job! This was a great way to start my day!
Thanks for sharing these photos, Elliot. They are fascinating. Glad you were able to leave North Korea safely (after your 2-hourlong search).
Hi Elliot.
Really awesome set of pictures i greatly admire your courage. But two quick questions for you, please. If they had found your undeclared copies of these photos. What would have been the punishment? i assume possible imprisonment? Also what were the prices for goods and services like in USD?
Thank you for sharing your visit and experience with pictures and subtitles. In all honesty, I don’t think I would visit North Korea or China even though I would love to see it first hand. Some of the scenery of countrysides and architecture are amazing. Unfortunately being surrounded by loudspeakers blasting propaganda, visual propaganda, pictures, and signs depicting Americans in a negative light would make me feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Reading you may get shot if you walk past a certain area, or if you’re American your are not welcome in some places, and just the general sense of controlled surveillance is eery and uncomfortable for me to take in. Did you ever feel unwelcome or possibly out of place?
Really, really enjoyed looking through your photos. Beautiful country that is sadly not accessible to the rest of the world.
Beautiful place, loved the countryside. Too bad not a real destination. Despite their political view, seems like a place one could enjoy (without some of the cuisine).
Hi Elliot, Awesome journey Bro’!! Have always been fascinated with the Koreas & Vietnam.. Tell me dude as an Indian citizen from Japan, is it easy to get Visa to travel in North Korea?? Can I manage with English there or else, impossible?? Well… Vietnam is really awesome! English so widely spoken there- they have an affinity towards Indians also! Next, Laos and Cambodia dude!
Cheers, Samuel
