In a Nutshell: I visited North Korea in late 2014 and over 16 days ventured to all corners of this mysterious nation on one of the longest itineraries ever executed for foreigners. Here are 100 photos (part 1) taken during this visit to North Korea.

Hi Elliott!
As a fellow world traveler currently on an trip through Asia, it was amazing to see your photos of North Korea! What a bizarre, crazy place full of beauty and brainwashing. It would be terrifying and yet thrilling to visit one of the most isolated places on Earth. You said that you backed up your photos. Did you back them up on a hard drive and they neglected to check that or how did you manage to sneak them out? I’m also curious how they would treat Asian Americans, being American with a non-white appearance. Are there other countries they dislike besides the US? It seems that the US remains at the top of the list.
Keep writing and exploring and I’ll do the same!
Fascinating photos…but they make me very sad too
First off, I think it’s great that you try to go off the beaten path and visit different places (something more people need to do). I also found your pictures to be fascinating and beautiful, so please don’t take the following comments the wrong way.
I just can’t help but feel that visiting North Korea isn’t a good idea since most of the money you spent is going to the North Korean government. You obviously realize that you were only shown what they wanted you to see, and meet who they wanted you to meet, which is not representative of the majority of the country. I understand why you posted the photos, but I can’t help feeling that they only serve the North Korean government. Posting photos depicting pretty tour guides, scenic views of the countryside, manicured gardens, statues/monuments, and happy smiling North Korean citizens is essentially just posting North Korean propaganda on the internet.
This is the third time I have read about a North Korean family on a celebration day inviting over a tourist to have lunch with them outdoors and drink soju. Take a hard look at the photo you posted of that particular lunch. Looks a lot like a live action shot of one of the many propaganda murals you posted…smiling and happy North Koreans celebrating the great life in North Korea.
Maybe I’m being too harsh and judgmental. Maybe visiting North Korea and posting these photos will help (I certainly found them interesting). Maybe some of the people you met are truly happy. Just realize that every single person you met and saw has zero civil rights. If any one of them decided to make a negative comment about their government, or failed to observe the proper etiquette at a statue of Kim Il Sung, or even just refused to have the obligatory photos of the Kims in their home, what do you think would happen to them? Do you really want this government to have any of your money?
Hi Elliott,
This is extraordinary, I went to south Korea top times and the diferences are so big…
In seoul You see millions of people no the streets, in the north it’s all so empty…
Congratulations on your work.
Thank you for sharing your experience in North Korea. Very interesting . Was just wondering the other side of this photo. May you continue to share us more .. i know its hard but im sure you can explore more, not even in North Korea but some other interesting countries.
I liked your open and unbiased approach! Keep it like that, thank you!
WoW this is just mind blowing. I have always imagined North Korea being a hidden gem in the world. Some of your pictures say just that. Being in the military I know I would NEVER take the chance of going there. Thank you for sharing, it was like being on a vacation as I was scrolling.
Your photos were truly amazing. People around the world must understand we are all human beings and are longing to learn from each other. No matter what country we are from, we are from, we must all have a opened mind of where we come from. Every country has its own rules and regulations and as each of of travel we learn to adapt. I have also traveled the world and have found each culture to be facinating and a wonderful experience. Bravo to you and what you do!
Thank you for putting these together, Elliott. Your photos are wonderful! I have read several books about North Korea and seen slides of friends who have visited, but your photos do seem to show more of everyday life and of the countryside. Very colorful and interesting subjects without losing the sterile undercoat. Will you put these in a book? Id love to share them with my book club. I don’t really want to visit, but I must admit I am fascinated by this strange little country.
Dear Elliott,
I envy you and all others who have visited the country. There is only one thing for me that removes any idea of visiting the country. The idea of being a “poker chip” as one friend described it. The idea is pretty self-explanatory. This may be a joke to some but serious to others like me. But still, I love any kind of footage about North Korea, especially these kind of “illegal” photos. I just saw both parts of your collection. But I also want to know which of these photos survived inspection. Some photos are obvious to me as being unacceptable to their standards. But I have always been curious as to what are their standards specifically. I suggest making a part 3 showing the photos that survived inspection. I think that would be interesting to show both the full collection (Parts 1 and 2) versus the restricted collection (Part 3). Congrats on making it out safely and AWESOME PHOTOS!!
PS. Psst…Don’t reveal how you snuck these photos out. THEY will know. Then, it will become harder for others to smuggle out good pics.
