In a Nutshell: I visited North Korea in late 2014 and over 16 days ventured to all corners of this mysterious nation on one of the longest itineraries ever executed for foreigners. Here are 100 photos (part 1) taken during this visit to North Korea.
About: I’m Elliott. I’m the tour director at North Korea tour operator Uri Tours. I travel a lot myself, sometimes to the unusual, weird and wacky. Earth Nutshell is where I share my experiences. Interested in visiting North Korea for yourself? Shoot me an email at [email protected].

Thank you for the “taking me back” images. I came from Vietnam before opening door to the world. It was refreshing and reminding at the same time.
Mesmerizing. The place has so many facades. Can only imagine what happening ( or not happening) in those buildings and high rises. The local housing is no surprise. Really feel for the misfortune of being born there.. talk about your bad luck.
mahalo nui loa the great photos, and insight.
Probably the best thing I’ve seen and read this year. Beautiful photos and I love the captions. Learning is fun when you have such visuals. Thank you so much for sharing!
In just a few hundred pictures you’ve captured the essence of a select North Korean culture. Obviously more about those privileged than the masses who are suffering atrocities under the regime of Kim Jong-ll. It’s a story of two cultures, the one you where allowed to photograph, and for obvious reasons the one you weren’t. I think your comments on each photo accurately described the real picture seen through your eyes. Fortunately, they could only confiscate your pictures, not your words. Thanks for taking me through this journey of North Korea. This would have made for a wonderful documentary on PBS.
I love your picture
You must have a “Experience” with those great communist leaders around you.
This comment comes from a ex communist born and rise in Eastern Communist block and disgusted by those big GREAT LEADER and not to mention they look identical to those from my ex communist country.
Since they have so much propaganda with their so GREAT LEADERS and Great Party I was wondering if they make any toilet paper with the face of their Great Leader?
I need as much I could get of that paper.
Thank you.
THE EX COMMUNIST GUY.
Please do not comment on my bad English……………I know it already.
Hi Elliot, regards from Mexico, amazing work and narrative by the way… which tour agency did you book for your journey?
Thanks for sharing.
Intriguing photo’s of your expat. I am going to S.E. China in a couple of weeks to instruct English majors at a University in Fuzhou and I am sure I will obtain some respectable footage myself being that I have signed a one year contract with an option to renew next spring
Great pics, I really loved them. One question though…
Where are all the people? In many of the pics, you were surrounded by expansive urban areas with quit a lot of large buildings, both commercial and residential and yet it seemed that their were very few people out and about in those cities. There are 25 million people in North Korea and yet it looked mostly empty. Why is that?
One of the things I noticed was a lack of pets of the families. Just curious if this was a cultural norm or if there was a economical/political reason behind this? Or you saw some and they just didnt make it into the photos!
I spent a good part of an afternoon going through your work haha! Time well spent 🙂
