In a Nutshell: I visited North Korea in late 2014 and over 16 days ventured to all corners of this mysterious nation on one of the longest itineraries ever executed for foreigners. Here are 100 photos (part 1) taken during this visit to North Korea.
About: I’m Elliott. I’m the tour director at North Korea tour operator Uri Tours. I travel a lot myself, sometimes to the unusual, weird and wacky. Earth Nutshell is where I share my experiences. Interested in visiting North Korea for yourself? Shoot me an email at [email protected].

Your photos are amazing. They remind me a lot of my visit to Czechoslovakia, while under Communist rule. Immaculate government buildings were a stark contrast to the run down buildings the majority of the population had to live in.
Still built by humans, and beautiful in its own way. I doubt you were able to engage much on a philosophical front, but what was your impression about how much the people really know? Are they completely brainwashed, or act like they know, but just can’t do anything about it? Any possible reunification pivots on this central understanding of the North Korean people’s mindset. Therefore sparks the curiosity. Is it really not possible for them to sit back and think, “this sucks?”
NICE PICTURES! YOU HAVE TO HAVE GUTS TO GO TO NORTH KOREA. THAT IS WHAT A CALL AN ADVENTURE!
GREAT PICS.
THANKS FOR SHARRING
Amazing photos! Really quite eye-opening for someone who has only the U.S. perspective to derive an opinion from. It’s amazing to me that western foreigners are even allowed to tour NK with the seemingly deeply rooted hate for the U.S. and U.S. allies. Reading through these comments, I am surprised to discover others who have toured NK and expressed that they never felt like they were in danger. There are so many stories of tourists traveling to NK and then being accused of spying, spreading American propaganda (like the guy that left a Bible in his hotel room) and then are imprisoned. It just makes it seem like, as a westerner, you’d be black-bagged on sight and would be crazy to take your chances vacationing there! Your experience shows something completely opposite of those expectations…they made you a cake and celebrated your birthday, of all things!
I’d love to read more about your experience. The captions on each picture were incredibly helpful but I find myself yearning for more! What pictures did you take that got deleted? What do you mean when you say that you had backups? Did you hide flash drives? or rename all the picture types to some obscure file type that wouldn’t display a thumbnail to someone browsing through it? Very curious to know more about everything! Thanks!
Thank you for sharing! What a fascinating look in what is for us such a forbidden world.
This is amazing. I dont know why but i have always been interested with their secrets and their country…. Awesome man!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed perusing these photos. When you took a shot did your guide have to approve every one?
Amazing pics! Thanks for sharing with us!
These Pics are really great and give a good insight into N.Korea. May I know If are you wiling to come to India? I will be your guide! Keep up the good work.
Hey Elliott,
As a Korean American – I really enjoyed looking through your photos. Your captions were great!! I love that you were able to capture the reality and the beauty of NK in a way I haven’t seen before. A real eye opener for sure!
I know a few people that have visited NK as well, but were never allowed to take photos like this and they weren’t as gutsy as you to even think of a backup. So curious to know how you even bypassed their intensive search routine.
Now that you’ve “exposed”/shared all the photos – pretty sure they won’t ever let you back in NK (not that you would want to go back or do you?), correct? Are you on their blacklist now? 😉
Anyways, thanks for sharing and looking forward to more of your adventures!
